Burning of Norfolk Navy Yard, 1861: A painting in stages

Monday, January 30th, 2012

As an artist, John Gwinn often creates his paintings in stages. He progresses the shapes and colors as the mood and piece direction him.

To help demonstrate this incremental creative process, John has shared four photos of a single painting, entitled Burning of Norfolk Navy Yard, 1861. The photos highlight the development of the art as John added more colors and different highlights to the piece. The painting took three weeks to complete from blank canvas to finished piece.

John Gwinn with recent abstract paintings

As John’s sense of ‘abstract’ develops over time, his art continues to change and progress as well. John has recently taken his work in a bolder, simpler direction. Bright colors and thick, heavy brush strokes fill the canvas and dance with a definite exuberance.
